Dear Southview
Parents/Guardians,
As you are aware, the traffic on Marvyn Parkway/AL Hwy
51 during dismissal from Southview Primary School is a challenge. The city
has made many requests to the Alabama Department of Transportation to widen the
highway leading to Southview but there are no immediate plans to do so. As
cars park on the side of Marvyn Parkway prior to school dismissal, there are
concerns for the safety of all traveling along the road. Therefore, to
alleviate the congestion and make the travel pattern safer, we are implementing
a new procedure for afternoon carpool pick-up line.
Beginning October 3, 2022, cars will no longer be
allowed to line up on Marvyn Parkway past the turn lane into Southview or block
the intersection at Gateway Drive. All cars in the pick-up line will be
routed to Hall Avenue to wait for dismissal at 2:45 p.m. The Opelika Police
Department will have an officer at the intersection of Hall Avenue and Hwy 51
and one at the Southview entrance/exit on Hwy 51 to direct traffic during
dismissal. All cars will be directed to park on the right side of Hall Avenue
and wait for dismissal. Please do not
block driveways. We are communicating this plan with the residents of
Hall Avenue and appreciate their cooperation.
Following student pick-up, cars will still be allowed to exit on Marvyn
Parkway or Gateway Drive. A map of the
new traffic pattern is below.
We realize that change is hard, but we appreciate
your understanding as we work to make the traffic pattern safer for all
residents traveling on Marvyn Parkway. If you have questions, please
email [email protected]. If you have immediate safety concerns, please call the Opelika
Police Department on the non-emergency dispatch number at 334-705-5260.
We appreciate your cooperation in making this area
safer for all vehicles traveling in the area each day.
